USACE and EPA identified a need to have video data analyzed from a past remotely operated vehicle (ROV) survey of the Miami ODMDS and surrounding area. The analysis was to focus on federally managed species such as tilefishes (Malacanthidae), if present. ANAMAR was contracted by USACE to analyze the 18 hours of video data. Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) assisted with this task.
ANAMAR and HBOI reviewed the video dataset, compiled observations for each 2-minute segment, spatially plotted the ROV transects along with observations of golden tilefish (Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps), potential tilefish burrows, other federally managed species, potential tilefish prey species, possible disposal material, and derelict vessels on maps. An estimate was made of the local tilefish habitat within the ODMDS. Benthic macrofauna, which could be potential tilefish prey organisms (e.g., mollusks, crustaceans, fishes), were identified to the lowest practical taxonomic level based on the videotapes.
The final report approved by USACE and EPA included an estimation of the local tilefish habitat within the ODMDS based on the video, the occurrence and distribution of other federally managed fish and invertebrate species, and recommendations of further studies.
